Paddling Into Paradise - An Exploration of Banff's Alpine Lakes
- July 22, 2024
When you think of Banff, the first images that might come to mind are the majestic mountains, vibrant wildlife, and stunning vistas. But there's another facet of this Canadian gem that deserves your attention: The serene alpine lakes, perfect for a day of canoeing!
The Canadian Rockies are home to several Alpine Lakes! Here are some of the top Alpine Lakes near Banff to paddle on!
Lake Louise
**Distance from Charltons Banff Hotel:** 57 km (35 miles)
Lake Louise is perhaps the most iconic of all Banff’s alpine lakes. Surrounded by towering peaks and the famous Fairmont Château, this glacial lake is a must-visit. The turquoise waters make for an incredible canoeing experience, with the stunning backdrop of the Victoria Glacier. Rent a canoe from the boathouse and enjoy a peaceful paddle while taking in the breathtaking scenery.
Moraine Lake
**Distance from Charltons Banff Hotel:** 52 km (32 miles)
Another stunning option is Moraine Lake, known for its vibrant blue waters and the Valley of the Ten Peaks. While CANOE RENTALS are available, be sure to arrive early, as the parking lot fills up quickly during the summer months. The reflection of the peaks in the lake is a sight you won’t forget, making every paddle stroke feel magical.
Johnson Lake
**Distance from Charltons Banff Hotel:** 25 km (15.5 miles)
For a quieter alternative, head to Johnson Lake. This hidden gem is less crowded than Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, providing a more tranquil canoeing experience. The surrounding forest and mountain views create a peaceful atmosphere, and you might even spot some local wildlife while you paddle.
Two Jack Lake
**Distance from Charltons Banff Hotel:** 22 km (14 miles)
Two Jack Lake is a popular spot for both canoeing and picnicking. The calm waters are perfect for beginners and families, making it an ideal choice for a relaxed day on the water. The views of Mount Rundle in the distance will take your breath away, and the NEARBY PICNIC AREAS are perfect for a post-paddle lunch.
Canoeing Tips for Your Adventure:
- Renting Canoes: Many of these lakes offer canoe rentals on-site, but it’s a good idea to check availability during peak seasons.
- Safety First: Always wear a life jacket and check the weather before heading out. Conditions can change quickly in the mountains.
- Pack Essentials: Bring plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen, and a camera to capture the stunning scenery.
- Permits: Before you set off on your canoeing adventure, it's essential to check if you need a permit for your chosen lake. Some locations may require a Parks Canada permit, while others will have specific guidelines for watercraft usage.
Whether you've been canoeing for years or are planning to try it for the first time, the alpine lakes of Banff offer an unrivaled opportunity to explore nature and make lasting memories! Start planning your paddling adventure today for your stay at the Charltons Banff!

The front desk personnel were very friendly and accommodating. We would definitely recommend this hotel and would stay there again the next time we visit the area. ”
-Cathy B,“Don't hesitate to stay here, we had a loft room and it was great. Very comfortable bed, good shower pressure, well kept and clean room. We were able to also book ourselves into the pool for the 30 min time-slot, and we also enjoyed that. Very friendly front desk staff. Overall we were very pleased and definitely recommend this hotel! ”
-Sharon S,“Exactly what the title states. We were only there for one night, but we really enjoyed the loft unit we had. We also took advantage of the complimentary breakfast as we were heading out of town early. There was a lot of snow overnight and we woke up early to see probably 6 people working to clear the lot. Our room had a TV both up and down with a fireplace by the main entrance door.”
